Hi,
I have a few questions. I have 20k to invest and I can afford a high degree of risk on it.
Is it a good time, right now, given the current market situation, to invest in an index mutual fund or an index ETF? (In fact, does anyone know at all whether it is a good time or not?) If so, why or why not?
If it is a good time, then I would like to invest specifically in a low cost index fund for the long term (5+ years). First, which one out of a mutual fund and an ETF would be the better choice? Why?
Also, how can I make a good choice for a specific low cost index fund? What criteria can I use to compare then? I know about Vanguard and a few others, but I don’t know how to make my choice.
Thanks a lot!

I would like to begin investing some money, as I have started a new job.
I would like to invest in a no load mutual fund, with emphasis on growth (I plan to invest for at least 5 years or more). My initial investment would be about $1000, and I would like to add another $1000 quarterly, or smaller fortnightly payments.
I don’t know where to find Australian no load mutual funds. The closest thing I have found is Vanguard Australia’s diversified investments, which are not ‘no load’, but appear to be quite competitively priced. Unfortunately the minimum investment is $5000, an amount I will not have aquired for another year.

1945-1964 are the years the baby boomers were born. So many were born that bigger schools had to be built, and there was a very high demand for college students to become teachers. It’s now 46 years since the first baby boomers graduated high school, and they start turning 65 next year. Retiring on fixed incomes, having medical needs, dental needs, nursing home needs, physical therapy needs, there is a high demand for Doctors, Pharmacists, Nurses, Therapists, and within 15-20 years Funeral Directors. Cemeterys will become a thing of the past. There just isn’t enough acerage. Crematories will prevail. There are 78 million baby boomers!!! that’s six zeroes: 78,000,000. Choose your career carefully, and invest your retirement funds with baby boomers current status in mind.

I am 23 years old and I am trying to start to put aside money for retirement. Currently, I would say that I could safely do $2500 annually, although I might be able to contribute a considerably greater amount to that–maybe a thousand dollars more. I have considered starting a Roth IRA, but I have been told that it is wise to diversify and invest a larger portion of your savings into the stock market while you are younger. What is the best way to begin? The key word is BEGIN. I will likely be able to increase my annual savings as time goes on. This is my first full-time job. I have no debt. I am single. My place of employment does not offer a retirement plan. I cannot think of any more pertinent info. Please help!

For tax purposes, I am a US resident alien and I am a citizen of another country(India) where I have invested about 10K USD in mutual funds offered there. The mutual funds are generating about 10% or 1K per year as dividend income and they are tax free from Indian govt. The returns are 10% because inflation is about 14% in that country.
I fall in the 25% income tax bracket and live in Florida where there is no state income tax.
1. How will such mutual fund dividend income of 1K be taxed from me?
2. Are there any tax breaks available on them?
Can someone please advise?
